The Fw 190 was the main single seat fighter plane of the German Air Force during World War II, developed under the design philosophy of Dr. Kurt Tank, who believed that "fighter planes should be war horses, not race horses." The A-4 model in particular is the final form of the early silhouette model before the engine mount was extended.

Dr. Tank avoided the disadvantages of air cooled engines, which have a large frontal projection area and high air resistance, by narrowing the diameter of the cowling to the minimum and mounting the oil cooler and oil tank in front of the engine to reduce the projection area. Furthermore, he maximised the performance of the high power air cooled engine, such as gaining speed with the thrust of a single exhaust pipe
